The world’s largest wheel comes to a standstill: macabre theories and its unknown history

The largest wheel in the world is in Dubai, and its operation was suspended more than two years ago. This wheel, known as Ain Dubai (the Eye of Dubai), is a mega construction built with more steel than the Eiffel Tower and is twice as tall as the London Eye. However, its attractions have not been fully enjoyed, and the true reasons for its closure remain a mystery. The causes of this abandonment have not yet been confirmed, but reports point to mismanagement, failed investments, and political issues.

Why the world’s largest wheel stopped turning

With the intention of exceeding all expectations, this giant wheel was built in the heart of Dubai, surrounded by the most attractive skyscrapers on Bluewaters Island. After its opening in 2021, this site closed its doors in 2022 for renovations, and authorities have not explained why it remains closed. This mega project is owned by Dubai Holding, the investment portfolio of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who aimed to revolutionize the city.

Real estate experts point out that the ambition of some investment sectors is the main cause of an unprecedented downfall, which is why projects like this fail when they do not meet common standards. As a result, this site appears as an abandoned giant that attracts few visitors, and its shopping center is only visited by a handful of employees.

The mysterious reasons why the wheel was forgotten

Los misteriosos motivos por los que la rueda quedó en el olvido

Although the primary explanation for the abandonment of Ain Dubai is the lack of commercial interest, there are other theories as to why this giant wheel has been forgotten. Residents of Bluewaters Island, where it is located, claim that the project was unfeasible and that it interfered with the site’s structure, leading many to feel tremors when it was operating, while others assert that this construction compromised the foundations of the area.

But the greatest fear regarding this wheel is its potential collapse. According to collected testimonies, this structure could fall, and hotel developers planning to build in the area claim that it might collapse. Ain Dubai stands over 243 meters tall and was built to transport 1,400 passengers. Among its attractions, this space offered private cabins for dining, corporate events, and elegant parties.
