Traffic congestion in Dubai seems to be a thing of the past after the innovations implemented by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). In an effort to reduce travel times, Dubai has become a more friendly city where trips can be shortened thanks to high-impact projects within the emirate.
The roads of Hessa Street, Al Khail Road, and Sheikh Rashid Road have seen significant changes due to the construction of new bridges that have improved regular traffic, resulting in a record travel time reduction from 20 to 7 minutes. The promise remains the Trade Centre roundabout, which will begin construction soon.
The main innovations in Dubai that forever changed mobility
The journey between two streets can be done in 15 to 5 minutes thanks to this new strategy from the authorities in Dubai to build a 1 km bridge at the intersection of Hessa Street and Al Khail Road. This challenge, which was presented on December 22, is 54 percent complete, which includes improvements on four major streets. The project is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2025.
Another major infrastructure project was also introduced with the three-lane bridge on Sheikh Rashid Road to Infinity Bridge. This challenge also involved the formation of more improvement works for the Al Shindagha corridor, which includes the construction of three bridges. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion from Sheikh Rashid Road in Bur Dubai to Al Mina Road, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street in Mamzar.
Road safety and traffic, another of Dubai’s 2025 objectives.
The work at the Trade Centre roundabout is one of the most important within this road work plan in Dubai, which aims to convert this site into a surface intersection with five new bridges. This location is of great importance for transit in this area, as it connects Sheikh Zayed Road with five main streets: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, 2nd December Street, Zabeel Palace Street, and Al Mustaqbal Street.
With all the modifications announced by the RTA, it is expected that this plan will be resolved by this year, which will significantly reduce travel time in the area, shortening the delay time from 12 minutes to 90 seconds and cutting the travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street from six minutes to just one minute.
Dubai, the city of 20 minutes and a master plan.
Beyond the use of cars and urban mobility based on transportation, Dubai also has other projects to turn this destination into a “20-minute city.” On this path, it conceived what is known as the “Dubai Walk Master Plan,” which aims to install and build more than 3,000 kilometers of walkways and 110 new bridges and tunnels. This plan will begin its first phase between 2025 and 2027, with the intention of being fully completed by 2040.
With the aim of making Dubai a healthy city, this project will remodel pedestrian and bicycle paths, intending for residents to traverse the city in this way in 20 minutes, reducing the use of polluting cars and promoting a sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Cars will cease to be an option to turn this site into the ideal place for all inhabitants.
