An hour from Dubai: the cultural capital of the Emirates with 50 museums, festivals and more

Dubai has luxurious spaces with attractions for all tastes. However, those who choose to move away from the ostentation of Dubai have other destinations within the United Arab Emirates that can offer the most attractive walks for the whole family.

An hour away from the vibrant city is Sharjah, which was recognized as the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates and is one of the largest emirates within the territory. Before the renaissance of Dubai, this place was considered the nation’s most thriving city and is now regarded as a “bedroom” community.

Comparisons with Dubai are inevitable and their proximity makes them even more alike. However, in Sharjah, the cost of living is lower than the other destination and the rents much cheaper. This place boasts unique attractions that earn it the name of “cultural capital,” such as the 17 museums it houses, which are worth visiting for art lovers.

One of Sharjah’s main attractions is the Heritage Area. In this area, there are multiple buildings, including a main square with the Al Arsah Souk and, in its surroundings, the Al-Hisn Fort and the Traditional Emirate Handicraft Center.

Within this striking city are also the richest treasures of the United Arab Emirates. Its attractions tell the story of this thriving and mysterious nation where the oldest traditions come together. In its streets, one can discover the art of painting the body with henna, jewelry works, and tapestry weaving.

Among its most prominent cultural sites, one can visit the Sharjah Art Foundation and the Maraya Art Center, which exhibit interesting exhibitions that frequently change. It is also possible to learn more about the emirate’s history at the Art Museum and the Dr. Al Qassimi Gulf Studies Center located in University City, where photos, maps, manuscripts, and paintings are displayed.

The Sharjah Desert Park is one of the favorite outings for visitors to the city or those who choose to seek another alternative while settling in Dubai. This place is located 28 kilometers from the town and receives visits from more than 300,000 people per year, making it one of the must-see points of interest for tourists in the region. This place features various points of interest such as the Sharjah Natural History Museum, the Sharjah Botanical Museum, and the Arabian Wildlife Centre, with a variety of animals from the region.

This spot is one of the most sought after by tourists in this area where you can closely see reptiles, rodents, birds, mammals, and all kinds of animals that inhabit the United Arab Emirates. To get to Sharjah, you can take different systems and many book a tour from Dubai where the main spots are visited. However, you can book a taxi for half a day, costing 97 euros, or take a public bus for 1.70 euros. Renting a car is a very economical option and allows visiting other places like Abu Dhabi.
