Abu Dhabi and its airport recognized as global leaders

Some argue that journeys begin at the origin or destination, depending on the experience onboard. However, I believe that the airport also plays a crucial role, as does the destination you visit. With a capacity to handle 45 million passengers annually and a built area of 742,000 square meters, the Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi has, in just a few months, established itself as one of the largest terminals in the world.

Furthermore, Etihad Airways, the airport’s main airline, turns the journey into an exclusive experience from the very beginning thanks to its personalized attention. Its commitment to the Spanish market is evident, as shown by its recent sponsorship agreement with Girona FC for three seasons.

In fact, Etihad has increased its operations in Spain by nearly 50% since last summer. It now operates ten weekly flights to Madrid and Barcelona, in addition to introducing seasonal flights, such as the three weekly flights to Málaga starting in June.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS AT THE START

EL VIAJE COMIENZA DESDE EL PRINCIPIO

Upon landing at the Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the undulating design of its roof, mimicking the desert dunes, stands out. This design allows natural light to enter and features high-performance glazing, which controls glare and heat, contributing to the terminal’s energy efficiency.

Its imposing architectural lines also house one of the largest environmental art installations in the Middle East. This is Sana Al Nour, a Barjeel structure inspired by the wind towers of the Gulf region. Its main feature is that it facilitates airflow that saves energy throughout the terminal, while allowing natural light and fresh air to circulate through the upper and lower parts of the structure.

The commitment to technology at this airport is remarkable. The self-service kiosks, self-check-in systems, biometric controls, and a smart travel system ensure that the average time it takes to move between boarding gates is only 12 minutes, and the average wait time for luggage is 15-20 minutes, making it one of the fastest in the world.

THE AIRPORT AS A REFLECTION OF ABU DHABI

During the wait, travelers can explore the extensive dining and shopping area, featuring luxury goods, cosmetics, and gourmet delights, spread across 163 outlets covering 35,000 square meters. Additionally, they can enjoy the exclusive airport lounges, which reflect the spirit of Abu Dhabi. This emerging city is committed to cultural tourism that is relaxed and family-friendly.

All of this solidifies the city as a destination where beaches and exclusive beach clubs can be combined, with avant-garde design restaurants, luxurious desert getaways, and diverse shopping options. Not to mention, of course, the must-see visit to the majestic Sheikh Zayed Mosque or Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace of the United Arab Emirates.

CULTURE, A FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR

In the cultural arena, the Louvre Museum, inaugurated in 2017, stands out. It is France’s most significant cultural project abroad, resulting from an agreement worth 1.3 billion euros over a 40-year period. The building dazzles with its stunning architecture, its permanent collection, and the high artistic level of its temporary exhibitions.

Undoubtedly, what will further establish Abu Dhabi as a cultural destination is the construction of the Guggenheim Museum. Currently being built by Frank Gehry’s team, the museum is set to open in three years, which will further enhance the appeal of this destination, which is more surprising than many travelers might initially imagine.

THE BEST HOTELS IN THE WORLD ARE IN ABU DHABI

All this, of course, is complemented by a first-class hotel infrastructure. The world’s leading hotel chains have set up shop in the best locations and buildings in the city. Mandarin Oriental, The Ritz-Carlton, Rosewood, Four Seasons, Hyatt, Shangri-La, St. Regis, or Conrad are some of the most prominent names. The latter is located in the Etihad Towers and hosts, among other gastronomic options, the restaurant José by Pizarro, a proposal by the most international chef from Cáceres.

The cruise sector has also long favored this region, ideal for exploring the Red Sea by boat. Many cruise companies already have Abu Dhabi as a port of call.

In summary, the brand of a tourist destination is strengthened when all its key elements work in harmony. Like a well-oiled machine, this means having an excellent airport, with good airlines, numerous connections, attractive hotel infrastructures, and a destination with enormous potential.

Indeed, the local population in the United Arab Emirates has more similarities to the Mediterranean character than one might initially think. They are friendly, kind, and hospitable people who are determined to welcome quality tourism with their best face forward, competing in the world’s top leagues. Take note, because they are here to stay.
