Abu Dhabi and its dream neighborhood: 525 pastel-colored houses worthy of a video game

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is one of the most incredible places in the country where modern architecture is part of its charm. In Abu Dhabi, there is a multiplicity of neighborhoods and spaces where ostentation is part of its idiosyncrasy.

Large buildings with luxury spaces are part of the landscape, in which it is important to highlight the housing complex “Pixel”, a site with 525 apartments that creates a unique setting: together, this development resembles that of a video game.

How is the “pixelated” neighborhood in Abu Dhabi?

The Pixel residential complex was built this year by the Dutch firm MVRDV and is located in Makers District on Reem Island. This site features 525 housing units, as well as offices and spaces for shops and restaurants. This ambitious project includes seven towers that “fall” in terraces and viewpoints, giving it a unique appearance, similar to a video game.

The architects in charge of this neighborhood chose pastel tones for the buildings, giving it a particular charm that tries to resemble a set of pearls. This neighborhood features a central square with restaurants and cafes, offering all the comforts for residents to enjoy the outdoors while also having access to the beach. This complex is also designed to include a gym, a clinic, or a school in the future.

This “pixelated” neighborhood in Abu Dhabi promises to revolutionize space architecture and generate a different vision, where buildings seem to fall and merge into a collection of pastel colors. As indicated on the official MVRD website, this site is designed so that at its base “the towers appear to spill over the square, creating terraces and windows in the arcades,” giving Abu Dhabi the space it needed to continue distinguishing itself from the rest of the world.

Life in the apartments merges with life in the square, giving the project a sense of place and an identity that distinguishes the complex from others in the United Arab Emirates, said the project’s creators. Another detail that gives the Pixel development its uniqueness is that its façade is inspired by the works of artist Nicole Martens, who contributed the pastel-colored details inspired by oyster shells and meant to evoke pearls.
