The New Era of Facial Recognition at Abu Dhabi Airports Transforming the Travel Experience

Facial recognition is one of the modern alternatives that will be implemented at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport. **Facial recognition emerges as the innovative option that will replace the boarding pass.**

This innovation is part of the “Smart Travel” program, driven by Abu Dhabi Airports, which aims to integrate **artificial intelligence** into its system so that by **2025 this will be a reality**.

Another stage: facial recognition that will mark a new era in the world

Otra etapa: el reconocimiento facial que marcará una nueva era en el mundo

For simpler travels and without long lines before boarding, Abu Dhabi Airport aims to implement this innovative project using artificial intelligence. With this plan, passengers will be **automatically recognized** without the need for prior paperwork. With the endorsement of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security of the United Arab Emirates, this system will allow **verification of each traveler’s documents in just seven seconds**.

With this innovation, airlines have found **various benefits beyond the speed of procedures**. Among the multiple advantages, companies will avoid infrastructure costs and also reduce the risks of fraud and document forgery. This service is already being implemented by some airlines, such as Etihad Airways, and five others are in the process of adopting it.

Facial recognition: the background in Europe

Reconocimiento facial: los antecedentes en Europa

This facial recognition technology innovation is not exclusive to Abu Dhabi; **Artificial Intelligence can also be used in Europe to expedite procedures at airports**. In Italy, for example, the system called FaceBoarding has been implemented at the Milan Linate and Catania airports, operated by the SEA company. This innovative mechanism allows travelers to scan their faces and documents at kiosks, **streamlining security checks and boarding at multiple points throughout the airport**.

**Security and identity data are among the concerns regarding this new use of Artificial Intelligence**. However, the company operating in Italy assures that this data will remain secure. “Facial images are not stored; they are only used to create a biometric template necessary for passing security checks and, eventually, boarding at the gate,” they added on their website. **In this way, the aim is to change the travel system worldwide, and users will no longer need a boarding pass for their flights**; this innovative mechanism will allow for expedited procedures, and passengers will be able to be in their seats in a matter of seconds.
